re:wake design was founded in January 2012 by Klockar Maria Johansson. In 2010, Maria quit her job in Sweden to follow her dream of volunteering in Africa. In Kibera, one of the largest slums in Africa situated in Kenya, she trained the citizens in entrepreneurship. Maria noticed that very few women applied for the program. The culture encourages women to stay home and raise the children rather than work outside of their home. Hence, these women had no income and more importantly, no capital to start up a business even if they wanted to challenge the status quo. re:wake design was founded to enable these women to get access to markets and learn how to operate a successful business. Today re:wake is linking upcoming female designers in Kenya with the Swedish market and providing them with entrepreneurship training.
